BROOKLYN BRIDGE FOREST antonina simeti / haruka horiuchi / nick senske
The much-loved wooden boardwalk of the historic Brooklyn Bridge will need to be replaced soon. The traditional material is naturally durable tropical hardwood, which is currently obtained through unsustainable practices. This project proposes an innovative partnership between NYC citizens, indigenous people, a historic landmark, and a tropical rainforest. The Brooklyn Bridge Forest mission is to create a global landmark in rainforest conservation by leveraging the prominence of the Brooklyn Bridge boardwalk to secure sponsorship funds, research support and oversight partnerships. Visit the Brooklyn Bridge Forest website to learn more.
We are currently working with researchers from the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies as we seek the best practices, materials and geography for this ambitious project.
