Habitat Bio - Sustainable Wood Pavilion at COP30
The Habitat Bio Pavilion is a bio-based net zero structure made from sustainable Brazilian timber in Belém, the gateway to the Amazon. This hub for collaboration is designed to draw together the shared interests, resources and participants of global movements for sustainable urban development based on biomaterials and forest management during the COP30. Accommodating up to 200 guests for events, meetings, receptions and panels discussion, the pavilion will demonstrate the sustainable use of wood in urban construction for global cities. Pilot Projects Collaborative is leading a partnership with Amazonian architects, and a wide range of national and international organizations focused on sustainable forestry, low carbon buildings and cites.
The Habitat Bio Pavilion will highlight both engineered mass timber and natural conservation wood products, demonstrating the integration between sustainable construction, urban development, and climate resilience. The structure will feature Brazilian wood from sustainable sources such as local community forests, certified plantation wood, whole-tree columns to minimize waste and reclaimed "circular" wood elements.
The pavilion will also host an exciting program of discussions with Brazilian and international experts, including forestry professionals, conservationists, architects and government authorities, to share knowledge about sustainable construction and forest management.
Global leaders, experts and practitioners will convene to share knowledge and shape the future of sustainable urban construction and forest stewardship. Foresters, architects, industry leaders, conservation specialists, and government officials will make up panel discussions, presentations, and round tables. The three floors of the Habitat Bio Pavilion were designed as an international platform for collaboration, decision-making and discussions on sustainable urban development and biomaterials. It will serve as a space where representatives from any country can witness the potential for such initiatives to be implemented in their own regions, regardless of biome or geographic context. By integrating global perspectives with the unique local environment, the pavilion offers a model that can be adapted worldwide. Through its diverse range of activities, it will promote dialogue, knowledge exchange and actionable commitments to environmental sustainability and urban resilience.
COP30 in Belém, Brazil
For the first time, the UNFCCC Conference of the Parties on climate will occur in the Amazon biome, hosted by the city of Belém in the state of Pará, Brazil. The Amazon, characterized by its global significance for climate change mitigation, represents the complex reality of international discussions and commitments on biodiversity conservation and sustainable development. This event will be a milestone, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the Kyoto Protocol, the 10th anniversary of the Paris Agreement and being the first COP held in the Amazon. COP30 comes after the announcement of 2024 as the hottest year on record, with temperatures exceeding 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, highlighting the urgency of climate change. The event will be a central point to discuss global collaboration in mitigating the climate crisis, reinforcing the need for urgent action.

Belém offers a unique platform to bring together stakeholders committed to climate mitigation, forest conservation and sustainable construction. The emphasis on sustainable wood will highlight biomaterials-based solutions for urban development, promoting collaboration between communities, governments, international organizations, academics and private sector leaders. The integration of forestry solutions into urban development will be crucial for climate resilience and sustainable growth.
The city is deeply linked to rivers and Amazonian culture, with a history of intimate connection with the Amazon River and its tributaries. Commerce, fishing, cuisine and local traditions are shaped by the presence of these rivers, which play an essential role in the daily lives of their inhabitants. A floating pavilion in this scenario is not just an architectural element, but an expression of the rhythms of the Amazon and its people. It reflects adaptation to local landscapes and culture. The Habitat Bio Pavilion symbolizes the connection between urban life and the forest, integrating traditional knowledge and contemporary innovations.
